Vintage mid-century "blackamoor" (or "Moretto") figural brooch, a highly collectible style popularized by historic Venetian jewelers like Giulio Nardi and various prominent mid-20th-century costume jewelry designers.
Central Figure: Features a carved male or female bust, typically formed from ebony, onyx, sardonyx, or painted glass/resin.
Headdress & Regalia: Adorned in a textured, gold-toned scrolling frame imitating royal attire.
Embellishments: Accented with blue sapphires, a prominent ruby-colored glass stone at the crown, clear rhinestone/diamante pavé collars, a green glass focal bead, and a dangling mother-of-pearl or faux-pearl drop at the base.
Originating in Venice, Italy, these pieces traditionally referenced stylized depictions of North African figures, often inspired by legendary characters like Shakespeare's Othello, the "Moor of Venice". While highly popular as luxury souvenirs and high-fashion runway statement pieces from the 1930s through the 1960s, they are viewed today through a complex historical lens due to their exoticized depiction of ethnic figures.
Measures approx. 2 1/8" x 1 1/8 across. No stamps or hallmarks.
Very good pre-owned item. No missing or damaged stones.Â
